How To Find Camping Beds For All Occasions

January 14, 2010 by admin

The opportunity for a restful night is appealing to campers today, as people realize their need for a good night’s sleep. Camping beds come in a wide range of sizes and comfort levels. Now campers can choose from an ultra-light backpacker to the creature comfort car camper. Models of camping equipment, with exciting new features, emerge daily. With the right choices, spending the night in the woods can include the same comforts enjoyed at home. Thanks to the increased development of quality camping beds, campers have dismissed the fear of a possible sore back with each camping venture. They are free to concentrate on their enjoyable camping experiences.

Foam Camping Beds

For years backpackers have used rolled foam camping beds. These beds are durable enough to be used for cooking in camp. They double for a table when needed to keep cookware free from dirt and sand. These reasonably beds are light and warm, a gentle comfort for backpackers.

Self-Inflating Camping Beds

Thermarest, a line of self-inflating camping beds, provides more warmth than foam mats, and they are of comparable weight. A layer of air, held between two layers of insulation, keeps a camper warm. Self-inflating beds give extra cushion, sorely needed when rocks and sticks lie beneath the tent.

Full Inflating Beds

Full inflating beds offer even more warmth and protection, but their weight and bulk restricts usage to groups who are car camping. These inflatable beds are a luxury for campers, who bear the burden to transport them to their campsite. Nevertheless, sleeping in these beds out under the stars is as comfortable as any bed in your home. When inflated, these beds occupy as much space as a standard mattress. It takes a lot of air to fill them and they are susceptible to punctures. A night on the cold, hard ground could be a possibility.

The Classic Cot

Another alternative to the inflatable camping bed is the classic cot. It is appreciated by car campers and base camps, as well, for it is comfortable, sets up quickly, and maintains the camper at a high level, well above the cold. These cots are much too heavy for backpackers. They are perfect for family-sized or wall tents. They take up too much space for smaller tents.

Hammocks

Hammocks are light and make a small bundle. With the right rain fly, a good hammock might even replace a tent. A hammock is great for a backpacker, who can easily assemble a rain fly using a tarp and a few pieces of rope. It is not wise to use a hammock during cold weather, as hammocks do not store heat. Heat escapes from hammocks and is absorbed by the surrounding air. Summer is the time for using hammocks.

Select Comfort Beds: Pros And Cons Of Sleep Number Mattresses And Distinctive Details

January 11, 2010 by admin

The Select Comfort bed is well known thanks to the company’s aggressive Sleep Number advertising campaign which promotes the bed as a unique solution for couples who prefer different levels of mattress firmness. With 478 retail locations, a 24-hour sales line and a fully operational website, Select Comfort has quickly become the world’s biggest seller of customizable air beds.

For a high-level overview of the pros and cons associated with a Select Comfort bed, keep reading.

Pros and Selling Points of the Sleep Number System

The main selling feature for the Select Comfort mattress line is that it allows each individual sleeper to control the firmness level on their own side of the bed. So, instead of compromising on your bed’s softness, you can each have a bed that works for your body.

This unique feature is operated and controlled using a discreet set of remote controls which are tucked behind the bed and can be programmed with specific settings.

Other features include a 30-night trial period, 20-year limited warranty (but, it doesn’t include many parts), digital controls and high-quality fabric materials.

Cons of the Sleep Number System

The biggest drawback to the Select Comfort Bed is the “trench” effect created when both sides are inflated to a moderate to full firmness setting. Once the dual air chambers are inflated, a dip is created in the middle of the bed. Many sleepers find themselves rolling into this dip or fighting against it. So, if your spouse and you both prefer a firmer bed, you may be better off simply searching for a quality, traditional mattress that you both like.

The second major con against the Select Comfort bed is the mold problem that has recently developed into a large-scale, class-action lawsuit. Basically, because the Select Comfort Sleep Number system sucks air inside the mattress, it also sucks in atmospheric moisture, allergens and mold spores. These spores then take root inside the mattress, spreading and becoming a major health hazard.

The other negative – that really isn’t bad per se – is that the firmness control displays degrees of firmness ranging from a level of 0 to 100, implying there are 100 individual levels. However, those levels all work in increments of 5 (e.g. 5, 10, 15, etc.), so there are really only 20 (actually 21) total firmless levels. Granted, this is much better than merely one, but it’s far fewer than implied.

Cost of the Sleep Number Mattress

Select Comfort makes six different Sleep Number beds, beginning with the Sleep Number 3000 and going up to the Sleep Number 9000, the brand’s luxury model.

Prices for the Select Comfort Bed will range from approximately $450 for a basic, twin-sized Sleep Number 3000 all the way to $4700 for a Sleep Number 9000 King Size with all the included accessories.

Where You Can Buy a Sleep Number Air Bed

To buy a Select Comfort bed, visit their website for immediate purchasing and financing, or you can go to one of their over 470 retail stores across North America. Should you choose one of their mattresses for the 30-night test, note that payment of all return delivery charges will be yours if you decide not to keep it.

Adjustable beds can help with Acid Reflux and muscle aches

December 18, 2009 by admin

Almost everyone has seen and knows about adjustable beds. These are the kind of beds used in hospitals that have all the adjustments to allow for maximum comfort. Although some can be adjusted manually, most beds in use today are electrically operated by the user.

There are many reasons why you should consider an adjustable bed.

COMFORT: As we age, our sleeping preferences change. Some people prefer several pillows to raise their head. Others place pillows under their knees to relieve back stress. An adjustable bed removes the limitations of using pillows to put your body in a comfortable position. A simple push of a few buttons and your bed is set to it’s most comfortable position.

USABILITY: Bedrooms have changed a lot over the years becoming not only a place to sleep but a get away oasis for many. Many master bedrooms are now equipped with full sized televisions and even entertainment centers. The latest in master suite designs also add a fireplace for that romantic though practical touch. Watching that television or enjoying the fireplace however can be uncomfortable from a typical flat bed. The reason is that a flat bed only allows for a single position.

An adjustable bed allows full range of motion that can put you in the most comfortable position to actually enjoy your bedroom retreat. Watching television or enjoying the fireplace is easily accomplished by adjusting your bed to a reclining position. Your bed can literally become the most comfortable chair in the house for watching TV, reading or just relaxing.

BETTER SLEEP: Unlike typical flat beds, an adjustable bed can be adjusted to match your most comfortable sleeping position. Backaches disappear and there’s no need for those pillows under your legs to straighten out your spine.

One of the most rapidly growing ailments for many of us is Acid Reflux disease. Acid reflux is caused by the flap between the esophagus and stomach not sealing completely. In a flat bed, this condition may allow stomach acid to back up into the esophagus and throat, giving a sense of choking or drowning. It’s also most unpleasant as it also usually ends up causing a deep burning sensation of the esophageal lining.

One successful method to limit this condition while sleeping is to use gravity. By raising your head, the sloping position limits the ability of stomach acid to travel back up the esophagus, thereby limiting the sleep disruption capacity of the disease. Instead of trying to prop several pillows up to keep your head raised, an adjustable bed makes it easy and much more comfortable to sleep.

So in the end, if you enjoy your bedroom as a personal retreat or just want a better, more comfortable nights sleep, then consider an adjustable bed.
